Running With Mom Running Club: Putting Girls at The Center of Sports

It's well-documented that teenage girls drop out of sports at significantly higher rates than boys, often because they feel they don't belong or lack confidence in their abilities. This sense of exclusion can stem from a lack of positive role models, feeling judged or uncomfortable in competitive environments, and not seeing sports as a welcoming space for them.

My mission with the "Running with Mom" club is to change that narrative. I want to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where girls are the centerpiece. My vision is to create an environment where everyday girl can feel accomplishment and belonging without feeling like they HAVE to Compete. Comparison is often the killer of JOY, and I feel I've done something well when I see happy girls leaving the practice laughing and happy about themselves.

They are not just participants but active contributors, with opportunities to design challenges that they find enjoyable. This empowerment allows them to take ownership of their fitness journey and discover what makes physical activity fun and meaningful for them.

My role as a coach is merely to provide safe guardrails and take part in the challenges, guiding them to find their joy in movement.

Making Memories

We don't just run. We work on ourselves, building ourselves to be stronger, faster, more balanced person by creating fun challenges like obstacle courses that include throwing, balancing, jumping, strengthening moves - all while encouraging each other - and maybe a little bit of friendly competition.

By running alongside their mothers, girls can see that fitness isn't just about competition—it's about community, personal growth, and enjoyment. We focus on celebrating every step of progress, no matter how small, and we encourage everyone to support one another. Through this club, I aim to empower girls to stay active by making fitness fun, accessible, and something they look forward to.

How do we prevent girls dropping out of sports?

Honestly, I don't have a solution. But I have ideas that I am implementing with my club.

When girls feel seen, heard, and supported, they are more likely to stick with sports, build confidence, and carry these positive experiences into other areas of their lives. The goal is not just to keep them running but to help them find their place in the world of sports and feel proud of it.
